History of the Teddy Bear
|
| |

Everyone loves a teddy bear, young and old, girl and boy. Teddy bear collectors are known as arctophiles from the Greek words `arcto` (bear) and `philos` (lover).
So why is our favourite stuffed toy bear call Teddy?
Well, the story goes back to 1902, when Theodore Roosevelt (whose nickname was Teddy) was President of the United States.
Theodore Roosevelt was a great hunter, and his vacations from the White House often included hunting trips to the western US. There are variations of what exactly happened on this one particular hunting trip. Either the President came across a bear cub or the President`s companions trapped a bear cub for an easy kill for the President. In any case, the President refused to kill the cub.
The Washington Post editorial cartoonist, immortalised the incident as part of a front-page cartoon showing how Teddy saved the bear. The story became fabled.
A Russian immigrant and enterpeneur, Morris Michton saw this cartoon. He and his wife Rose operated a novelty store in Brooklyn, New York. Michton asked Rose to make a bear to display in their store window to sell. Next to the bear he placed the cartoon and a sign that read...TEDDY`S BEAR. It sold immediately. The couple continued to make more bears and then opened a company called The Ideal Novelty Toy Company.
It was in 1904 when Teddy Roosevelt changed his mascot from a moose to the bear for his re-election campaign.
The teddy bear craze began, and has continued to this day.
